The Do’s and Don’ts of Custom Closet Design
September 25, 2015The decision to redo your closet could have a big impact. First, a custom closet saves you time and reduces stress getting ready every morning. It also helps you organize your belongings to help them last longer. Hiring a closet designer could even increase the value of your home.
To help you get the most from your new closet, follow these do’s and don’ts.
DON’T buy any old closet system
It’s easy to hop online and think you found the perfect DIY closet system, but you could run into some detrimental problems:
- The organizer could be the wrong size.
- You might not have the right tools or enough manpower to install the system yourself.
- You might end up drilling holes in the wrong places and cause more stress than you bargained for.
DO consult with a licensed closet designer
Many custom closet designers offer a free consultation so you get a feel for what the project will entail and how much it will cost before jumping in. Working with a licensed professional who offers a warranty has many benefits:
- You get insight you might not have thought of.
- You have access to professional-grade closet systems.
- You get the closet you want without doing the labor yourself.
- You enjoy peace of mind knowing the closet system will last.
DON’T assume a custom closet will be expensive
Closet designers know how to work with your budget so you can achieve the perfect organization system for your storage needs without breaking the bank. A DIY closet organizer may be cheaper upfront, but the need to replace it sooner could make it more expensive in the long run.
DO find a wall-or floor-anchored closet system
Custom designs are mounted to the wall or built from the floor up for stability. Because they’re custom-built for your specific space, they come in various heights and depths.
DON’T assume all closet materials are created equal
You have three primary materials to choose from:
- Wood: This choice provides a classy look and great strength for bearing heavy loads. However, wood is more expensive and heavier than other materials.
- Metal: Wire shelves are less expensive and easier to install than wood. They come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and have many optional accessories. However, wire looks less classy than wood and isn’t designed to bear as much weight. Wires also leave lines on clothes or towels laid directly on them.
- Plastic: Organizers made from this material are simple, affordable and easy to install. However, they can be fairly flimsy and can’t withstand the weight that wood and metal organizers can. They also tend to collect and show dust faster than wood and metal closet systems.
